The issue of mandatory fields in Navision is a contentious one. NAV uses events and triggers at many points during the data entry process. The way this is done makes it possible to start and end a process at many different points. This adds great flexibility to the [[Data entry]] process, since its is very flexible and allows different users to work in different ways.

One issue is that many users have work with rigid systems that force a specific field by field data entry process, and have trouble adapting to Navision's flexibility. One specific issue is that of making it mandatory to enter a field in a form. Since the user can use the mouse to bypass a field it is difficult to make it mandatory, and not allowing the user to close the form is not only frustrating, it also departs from [[The Navision Way]] of using the system.

One very effective solution to this issue, is to create a traffic light system. In this case an indicator (Red, Amber, Green) is placed on the form, and the user only gets a green light when all fields are correctly entered. Then it is a simple matter to not allow (say) a sales order to be created unless the Customer has a Green light.
